Hi,

I am having the hardest time upgrading a 5GB NTFS partition of an old
40GB drive onto a 60GB NTFS partition on a new 120GB drive. I'm
partitioning my new drive so that I don't have to re-install all the
applications that are on the D drive. Much to my disappointment, I
have tried the following;

1) Using Maxblast 3 to create the new partitions on the new drive and
then copy files to the new drive. However, Maxblast hangs just after
creating the partitions. This is the case when running in windows and
booting off a CD. By the way, the same thing happens with Ontrack
Disk Manager running in windows.

2) Using Drive Image 7 to copy the old partitions onto the new
partitions. Windows boots as far as the Blue Logo screen and then
stops. Tried to do a repair/re-install of XP off the Upgrade CD. I
get through the whole installation, but then when its time to re-boot,
it won't.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm running out of ideas!

Thanks.

Firstly does your system support a 120GB drive? Some older BIOS might not
recognize such a large drive.
Secondly do not use Maxblast with XP it seems to cause problems.
Thirdly and providing your system can recognize the 120 GB drive you should
ensure you have totally removed Maxblast then repartition the drive. Use
Drive Image to do a Disk->Disk copy of the old drive to the new drive. When
finished do not attempt to boot directly into the new drive. Instead run a
Repair Install on it first. Instructions on How to Run Repair Installation

Did you try the detect in the bios? Much can be solved if
you start there. I had all kinds of problems until I did an
auto detect of each HDD in the bios.

Also, try deleting the logical drives, and the partitions.
the recreating them. Then format the new logical drives to
NTFS before installing windows. If any 3rd party drivers are
needed during installation, be sure to have these FDD or
CDROMs at hand. Oh yes, I hope you have all your data backed
up - You'll need it.

Yes, my system does "seem" to support the 120GB drive. The
motherboard is a few years old, but it is a P4. But my BIOS has had
not problem recognizing the brand, model number, and capacity. I
never got far with MaxBlast, so when I used Drive Image, I would
reformat the partitions using Disk Management in windows. I have
tried several iterations, but I don't believe on every iteration did I
actually repartition using Disk Management. I will give that a try
before using Drive Image again. Previously, after using Drive Image,
I would immediately try to boot my system. Only after failing did I
try to do the repair installation off the CD. Does this make a
difference?

Thanks.
