XP with SP3 Update Hangs.

I was very happy with my system, the performance and reliability. For some
reason (call it idiocy), I opted to upgrade to SP3 and all it's other
updates (malicious tool etc).

What really annoys me more than what is below, is the fact that after
updating to SP3, my Kaspersky 7, Codecharge Studio, ASPstudio and a host of
other programs failed INCLUDING my Dlink wireless connection manager!
Needless to say, that one really got me going. I've resolved those issues
after spending quite a few dollars on updates and fixes for them, but that's
another issue.

Ooops and OK, now when booting XP with SP3, my profile hangs. Specifically,
my background image appears, but not my actual desktop (icon, shortcuts,
quicklaunch etc).

If I press the 3 magic buttons and select Shutdown and Logoff from the Task
MGR menu, then logon - all is well, albeit desktop refresh really blows when
I do a search - particularly of the Windows Root dir.

This seems to happen every third boot or so.

I've checked the Windows Update site and apparently am completely up to
date.

I can't seem to fix this, it's not critical as I can get around it, but why
does this happen.

Any ideas?

btw: I have the latest drivers and updates for All my Hardware, and this
problem began occurring before any hardware/driver updates. At least now
with these updates the problem doesn't occur all the time.

Once SP3 is installed,& before its 1st restart,one should run diskclean up,
defrag,& set to CHKDSK C: /F ...After,clean out windows & system Temp
folders...At this point,do whats listed above,plus,boot to xp cd,recovery,
type:CHKDSK C: /R

Yeah, my system is cleaned up on a regular basis, should have put that in my
post as well.

I think (???) that I found the culprit(s).I've never, ever, ever used
Windows Messaging. Having said that, my lack of attention comes in. I
suspect that I downloaded a WM update (even tho I had it hidden since 'mud
was dust'). I personally think it's just junk anyway, but that would be my
opinion.

Anyway, after my post, I noticed the WM icon in the taskbar and was
surprised to say the least.

I also noticed that Panda (my AV) popped up and wanted me to enable Windows
Messaging Protection. I guess this happens in some predetermined timeframe
as I didn't see it previously as it only displayed for 3 seconds.

So I nuked WM (I have a script that removes it from the system and sets the
service to disabled), as well I disabled Panda from using WM protection and
notifying me of WM protection.

Now the problem seems to be gone. I've shutdown and powered off 4 times and
rebooted just fine. I've rebooted (not powering off) 5 times with no
apparent ill affects.

It may be premature, but at this point all seems well again. I'm suspecting
an issue with Panda and WM protection??? I've sent a message to Panda
support.

If I have further problems, I'll post.

My AV was disabled (actually I crippled it) "Prior" to upgrading (network
upgrade). The issues began "after" the upgrade. In any case, all appears to
be well now and I received a fix (for registered users) from Panda that
"does fix" an issue with WM and Panda.

So all is well.

In your first post you mention you have Kaspersky 7 and in this post
you say Panda is your AV - do you have two AVs installed?

I had serious problems with SP3 (followed all the rules etc) unable to
boot in safe mode. On two computers had to uninstall Kaspersky, System
Restore pre SP3, reinstall SP3 in safe mode, reinstall Kaspersky. All
OK now.

John, sorry for the confusion. What I should have mentioned was that I "had"
Kaspersky on, after all the issues I had I switched to Panda.

Only have Panda, I don't put two on at all.
