How and where woud I change the resolutions? Thanks

Right-click on an empty area of the Desktop and then left-click on
Properties. Click on the Settings tab and use the slider to move your
settings to the new monitor's native resolution. Apply/OK out.

The monitor documentation (and sometimes an acetate overlay on the
monitor screen as it came out of the box) will have its native resolution.

Others have already told you that you need to change the resolution,
but let me add that for a widescreen monitor, you need a widescreen
resolution to see the image properly. It's possible, especially if you
have an older video card, that the video card may not support
widescreen resolutions.
