XP will not start in Safe Mode

Laptop will not boot up in any of the Safe Mode options or in "LAST KNOW GOOD
CONFIGURATION". After selecting any of the above, Windows begins to boot for
about 10 seconds; it displays the Windows flag on black background; then for
a split second it displays the "Blue screen of death", but not long enough to
see any of the text. Then it returns to the F8 menu and begins the countdown
to restart.

Prior to this problem, software (unknown) was being installed.

Thanks

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during StartUp and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

What means of restoring XP was provided with the laptop? Do you have a
Windows XP CD?

What is the laptop make and model? Do you have a manual?

Hope this helps.

Thank Gerry,

Because the HDD is generating clicking sounds, which probably means the
drive is ready to go, the owner has decided to replace the HDD. At this
point I see no reason to engage in any further troubleshooting, especially
since his most vital files were backed up.

Never the less Gerry, thanks for the response.
