XP will not recognize my Sony Mavica digital photos

Has anyone had this problem and how can I fix it? When I
put the disk into my XP machine it first will not
recognize that there is a disk in the drive. After a few
minutes and reinserting it a few times it finally does
but keeps telling me the disk needs formated.

I have used two different cameras and gotten the same
results.

The open fine on my home machine with Windows 98.
