XP WILL NOT BOOT --> I know this has been asked but my situation is strange

This is the third time this has happened to me. The first time I ran Windows repair and it solved it. The second time I ran windows repair and it shutdown in the muiddle of repair and then I ran repair again and it worked. This time I have tried repair, safe mode, and last good config and they all shut down in progress. The thing is it seems the longer I leave my computer off the further it gets in the boot process. For example I left my computer off for 3 days came back and just tried to start it and I got all the way on and was happy. But it said my ATI Radeon Pro 9800 was not responding or something, so I ran the update driver and software install and then restarted it to get it working but it just shutdown again. If I try to boot up right after another it doesnt get to the log on screen, but if I wait a day it gets to the log on screen and even lets me enter a password, but doesnt get any further than that. SO it seems that my computer has to build up energy to work properly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and if you are unable to come up with a solution can you please tell me how to clear my hard drive (format) and reinstall windows and start from scratch....Thank you in advance.

Is it possible your computer is overheating?
Can you give us any details about your hardware?

Perhaps it's time for an experiment. Open the case and listen -- see if you
can hear which component is clicking.

It could be overheating, despite the fans, if one of them is failing.

Or it could be the power supply.

Or a bad motherboard. Check for capacitors that are puffed up or leaking.
