Slow Start-up (I know this question has been asked before)

J

john

Hello,

I'm at my wits end. My start-up is now about 4 minutes long. Msconfig only
has 2 items checked under start-up: ccAPP for Norton & Cft.mon. A dell
hardware tech checked my computer & disabled the prefetch file, cleaned out a
lot of $ temp files & installed CCleaner. After his work, it seemed like the
computer took longer to boot up. The tech had me call fee based software
support & the tech there had me boot up in safe mode & it booted faster. He
told me one or my applications may be conflicting with one another. He
couldn't go any further with me unless I paid $129 for fixing the problem.

I know there have been other postes regarding start-up issues, but I keep
my computer well maintained, defrag regularly, scan disk, run anti software,
etc. If anyone has an idea what's going on here, I would sure appreciate it.

Would I benefit from doing a system restore back to a couple of months back?
Of course, I would lose what the hardware tech did.

One other odd thing which may or may not be related. When I hybernate my
system & try to ascess my home page at a later time, it takes quite awhile
for the home page to come up. Once it comes up, the computer works fast.

Respectfully,

John

You must have a short wit. Four minutes is OK. I admit there's only about
30 million lines of code that needs to be read for the thing to boot, but
you're not starting a TV.

Take it easy. Chill out. Be at one with your karma. If you spend zillions
of dollars you might shave off 10 seconds. Have a happy Xmas. Eat plenty
of food, keep warm and remember those less fortunate than yourself at this
time of year.

Unless you're booting up many times each day, four minutes isn't a big
deal. Chances are it's just Norton getting updated and scanning your
hard drive.

After the four minutes, does your PC perform well?

What is your CPU processor speed?

Do you leave your computer on 24/7?

Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

How much RAM memory?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry:

Some answers to your questions:

I don't leave the computer on 24/7

My RAM has 768 MB

Processor speed, 2.73 GHz

In device mgr, no yellow icons.

Thanks, John

Hi Gerry:

How do I paste the volumeC.txt to reply? I'm able to copy it, but when I
click on reply to your message, there is no drop down for paste?

In task mgr, under performance, commit charge total is 402800, limit is
1918744 & peak is 478928.

I checked the boxes for peak memory usage & virtual memory size. I could
only find 4 processes: CPU usage, 98;memory usage, 29848K;peak memory usage,
77804K.

The rest will come later.

Based on my own experience with Norton Internet Security 2007, I'd say
Norton is the prime suspect with regard to your "slow" start-up. It performs
scanning at start-up and in case you have LiveUpdate enabled it will start
downloading updates when so needed.

Try:
- Note time of boot in Safe Mode, with Norton;
- Note time of boot in Safe Mode, with Norton unchecked under start-up
(internet disconnected for safety precautions);
- Note time of normal boot with Norton unchecked under start-up (internet
disconnected for safety precautions);
- Enable Task Manager as soon as Windows allows at boot, view Processes,
ccSvcHst.exe and ccApp.exe, both Nortons, look for CPU resources and time to
"finalize" their work.

Just a couple of questions:

You say to enable task mgr as soon as windows allow to boot. "Allowed to
boot"? Do you mean when Windows boots up completely?

Will I have Norton enabled when I boot up above?

How exactly do I disable Norton?

And, "internet disconnected for safety precautions". How do I disconnect
the internet?

Thanks,

john

You omitted to check the box before Virtual Memory size. I also asked
you to provide the Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size
for each of the six processes using the largest amounts?

I also found that Norton Internet Security was killing my startup. It
got so bad that only about half of my normal notification area icons
were getting displayed (even though the programs associated with them
were running). I finally canned Norton and went with AVG.

Okay, from Processes, I get PID=3584;CPU=98;Memory usage=88912 K;Memory
Delta;248;VM size=77740K;CPU Time=3:24 seconds.

For six processes you need to provide:

Image Name Peak Mem Usage
VM Size

Explorer 46,072
23,784

Provide the details for the six highest scoring processes as
illustrated.

That is all I need.

Try to enable it as soon as possible after the Windows icons appear on the
desktop.

Will I have Norton enabled when I boot up above?

Yes, as it is programmed (by Norton) to load early in the Windows boot
process, if not disabled by you as written below, or in any other way.

How exactly do I disable Norton?

For testing purposes, this may be done by using the Startup tab in Msconfig,
uncheck the ccApp and click OK. Don't forget to check it again when your
"testing" is ended.

And, "internet disconnected for safety precautions". How do I disconnect
the internet?

In some way, somewhere in house, there is a communication connection between
the computer and the network provider, either directly from a modem, via a
router (wireless or not) etc, to be disconnected.
