xp will not boot from any source

Hi
xp will not boot up from any source cd or hdd goes to a black screen after
it says gathering system imformation
will not start in any mode as it does not get that far
please give me some ideas how to fix this

Enter the BIOS setup. You might be able to restore to defaults to get it to
boot to the CD
bios setup access keys. Go to:
