I am running XP Home and installed SP2 some time ago. Recently, I installed
several "security" updates and in doing so, have lost my Welcome Screen.
More specifically, I only have the option of the classic logon prompt with a
black background now.
I have checked my logon options in User Accounts (I am system administrator)
and both the Welcome Screen and Fast Switching boxes are checked; however,
this does not matter. All of the user accounts are still displayed here
(with the user's name and chosen picture) but I cannot get the Welcome Screen
at start ulp.
Also, I have attempted to do a system restore back to a date prior to the
updates being installed. This completed fubarred my McAfee Security Suite in
that I had messages after the restart that indicated my security suite was
not operating and some components were missing. I had to reinstall most of
the security suite and it is now functioning properly. I hesitate to do
another system "restore" for this reason.
I have "tested" the switch user option once logged on and my PC just hangs
indefinitely. I end up having to manually shut down by holding the power
button. When I turn it back on, yep, the classic logon screen w/black
background.
I do not have a home network or wireless connection. This is the only PC
(desktop) used by the household and uses a modem internet connection. I have
read most all of the postings regarding welcome screen and logon issues dated
back to November 2006, as I was not sure how long ago I updated windows prior
to my recent update (2/04/07).
The bizarre thing is that I am not receiving any error messages. The only
thing I have seen out of the ordinary is the "Windows UI unable to start,
program will shut down" or something to that effect. It asks to send an
error report and I click on "send report" however, the same window pops up
about 6 times, in which each time I click send report, then it finally goes
away.
I am hoping someone out there can help me figure out which update is causing
this problem and has a solution. I really miss my Welcome Screen : (
