I am a semi-hardcore gamer and I am running windows ME ,
what would be the advantage for me to upgrade to windows
XP? I have been asking but have yet to get any answers,
can anyone help me?

Hi, Moody. It's really hard to answer such a general question
specifically. It would be better for you to ask yourself (or post back)
what sorts of games you play? Then go to websites dealing with those
games and see if there are user forums and post some questions there.
For instance, one of my sons plays Half-Life and loves all the mods and
cheats, etc. He says (and others have confirmed) that the cheats won't
work in XP. Therefore, he wants to stay with Win98SE (although I may
set up a dual boot for him after I upgrade his box later this year).
The other son plays mostly Warcraft III Frozen Throne and its map Tides
of Blood. Using XP will work fine with that game. In general, XP is a
better operating system than Win98SE (and certainly everything is
better than ME!), more stable, more powerful. But there are other
factors in upgrading, such as whether your hardware will handle XP. XP
needs more power than Win9x. Post back with details if you want more
help.

HTH,

Malke

None, if your hardware and everything runs fine now, switching the whole OS
won't do a thing for you. There will be a 'disadvantage' though...your wallet
will feel a hell of a lot lighter.

ME is more compatible with more games than XP. If you have some old
games you really still enjoy playing, and ME is doing OK for you, then
you'd be better off waiting to upgrade until you have an actual need to
use XP. XP is more a "hype," than a "must have," especially if gaming
is what you want to do most with your computer, unless you want to play
a game that will only run on 2K/XP, which I haven't seen yet. The
Micro-Volunteers around here are too invested in XP, to give an honest
opinion about XP, and tend to be Volunteer MicroSales-Reps too.

Thanks for the info, the games that I play are Battlefield
1942 & Vietnam, USAF, SOF 2 and others, my computer has
Asus A7N8x Deluxe motherboard, AMD AthlonXP 2000+ 1.67GHz
CPU, NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 128MB video card, Sound
Blaster Audigy Gaming sound card and 512MB of RAM, that's
the main stuff. Thanks I might just wait to upgrade. gotta
go to da battlefield!!!

XP doesn't fall over all the time, no noticeable speed difference, network
support is much better. I ran 98SE for games and XP for everything else dual
boot for a while when I didn't think my processor was up to the job, but as
long as your computer's not 5 years old it'll be fine. It's got to be better
than ME, in any case. As one of the other replies said, check out any
specific issues you might run into with the games you play.
