Leon of London, Ontario, UK. ?

Having been a hardcore Gamer for yrs, I had put up with my average PC for
too long but still managed to "own"! I finally had enough for a complete
rebuild and was straight down to Tottenham Court Road to get my bits. ASUS
P5Q PREMIUM MOTHERBOARD/2 X HD4870 RADEON GRAPHICS CARDS/ARCTIC FREEZER
XTREME CPU COOLER/4X 2GB ADATA DDR2 667MHZ RAM/INTEL CORE2 DUO E8400, 6M
CACHE, 3.00GHZ, 1333MHZ FSB/NZXT TEMPEST GAMING CASE, and my original 500gb
SATA HARD DRIVE with Windows XP installed. I spend a day carefully putting
all together ans too my suprise it all worked first time except when it came
to boot into Windows, the Windows logo shows and it starts to boot then just
shuts down or crashes, no BSOD just back to restarting BIOS and all over
again. I have tried everything bar blowing it up with no joy! I even did a
fresh install using my original Set up Disc and finally got an error message
- "Set-up cannot set the required Windows XP configuration information. This
indicates an internal set-up error"
Does anyone know what this means? and how it can be rectified? I spent a
bloody fortune already, hope I dont have to fork out for a new O.S. set-up
disc as well??
Many Thanks in advance for your answers/Help...Leon.

Have you visited the Asus website to see if there are compatibility
issues with any of the other components?

Sometimes, documented compatibility problems between the mobo and other
components result in fatal hardware conflicts.

If they exist, know issues usually are documented on the manufacturer's
website.

Sorry, but are you, by any chance, trying to start Windows from an
already existing installation on a HD from another system - rather than
doing what is obvious - a fresh [clean] install.

Frankly, I am AMAZED that Windows started AT ALL - but not surprised
that there were problems.

However, problems arising from setting up WinXP from an XP Installation
CD is an entirely different issue, one which boils down to compatibility
between different components attached to the mobo (see my other post).

Hi Tim thanks for such a quick response, I,m not that big a Newb as to attemp
a swap of HD, I was doing a fresh clean minty breath XP install, didn't have
any important data on the 500gb SATA drive so figured it would be okay :{
I did a bit of research before shopping and checked for any compatability
issues with M/B, Drivers etc.. will check again but can't really see it being
that.
But thanks again for your time m8!!

P.S. Have they knocked down Nelson Mandela Estate yet??

Not a driver issue - [possibly] a hardware conflict.

I was reading about a guy who bought a new mobo and CPU and because the
serial [product] number of the CPU was like "one letter off" at the very
end of this very long code (an 'f' instead of a 'c' - I think it was) -
the CPU was like totally useless!!

This person also found out there was an issue in the fist place, because
the installation cd came back with blue screen errors and the
installation wouldn't take.

"Nelson Mandela Estate" ??

Is that the one that [used] to be near PCWorld (Nelson Mandela Way) or
are you just pulling my leg?

Were you able to boot in safe mode?

What flavor of XP are you trying to install?

If you are using a 32 bits Windows, I would try removing 2 RAM boards and
see what happens. 32 bits Windows cannot address more than 4 GB. I have 4
GB RAM on my P5Q and Windows XP pro 32 bits sees 3.25GB. Using 8 GB RAM
with 32 bits OS is useless. There are 4 slots for RAM on the MB, leave a
slot empty between the 2 RAM boards you will leave in the machine.

What is the SATA configuration in the BIOS? You need a driver on a floppy
disk to install XP in AHCI or RAID mode, if you don't have a floppy disk
drive on your system, set SATA configuration to IDE in the BIOS.
