XP Firewall and Online Gaming

Greetings
Currently I am using XP Pro Verion 2002 with SP2 and all MS Updates
installed applicable to my machine and set up.
I am an avid on-line gamer including some old and bold games.
The one that is causing me the greatest concern is MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries.
This is an MS product, I play with a group of other players with limited
support from MS (NBT-HardCore http://www.netbattletech.com/nbt-hc/index.html)
My Problem is that I am unable to join game servers when I have Windows XP
Firewall on, but when I disable the firewall, I can join the game servers
with no problem. The game is checked in the firewall settings so it is
allowed to communicate with the servers, I can see the game servers and the
list of game servers appear in the game. But when I go to join, it fails,
telling me that the server does not exist or there is a networking problem.
My friends are on the server so that discounts the disappearing server, and I
can still cruise the internet so that discounts the networking problem idea
as well. It appears to me that the Windows XP Firewall is blocking the
program even after I have declared it. I am somewhat worried here on 2
accounts.
1. I am using an MS product on a MS OS but it is not allowing me to use it
the way it was designed to be used, if I want to use it I have to turn off
securiety programs, to me, this appears to be asking for trouble.
2. Why should I have to lessen my online securiety to be able to play a
game, when the OS, Securiety Application and Game all come from the same
company.
I have been informed that I have to activate a number of TCP ports and UDP's
manually, but I am no expert and I am wary of just opening any port. Should
not of this problem been dealt with earlier, as I have been told by a number
of gamers that they have to play without their firewall on, as I have to now
and in the past. This I think is not right, could someone please explain??
and could someone please advise what has to be done so that I can play online
and with a firewall in place.
