XP & Vista ad-hoc

How do can you ad-hoc xp and vista computers as they dont seem to see each
other

Are you asking about ad-hoc WiFi connection, or peer-peer file sharing?

Ad-hoc WiFi is a tricky proposition, but isn't significant in a Windows Vista /
XP combination necessarily.

Peer-peer file sharing, between computers running Windows XP and Windows Vista,
is a challenge, but it can be done. The most common reason for computers not
seeing each other is a misconfigured personal firewall. With Windows Vista,
remember to set the Network Location Type to Private. But there are other
possibilities too.

Does any one have a link that gives step by step instructions for those of us
that are not complete computer gurus yet. I have a desktop running XP and
just got a wireless laptop with vista. I can't get them to recognize each
other yet either. My ultimate goal is to be able to share the printer I have
connected to the desktop.

Chuck, you seem to have some really good information but it is a little over
my head. Any other basic directions you or anyone else could provide to get
me started on the right path would be great.

Well, let's see if I can provide the step by step in ad-hoc mode (ad-hoc in the
context of this forum).

Start with "ipconfig /all", from both computers.

1) Open a command window.
2) Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" (less the ""), and hit Enter.
3) Type "notepad c:\ipconfig.txt" (less the ""), and hit Enter.
4) Copy and paste the contents of the Notepad display into your reply here.
