xp user logon missing

I'm having trouble with logging on to computer with XP sp1... everything
boots fine until comes up to the welcome screen... the user id icons are
missing from the screen... not allowing me to proceed to any further.
 
Try booting in Safe Mode (F8 on boot up) You should then be able to repair
user accounts when logged on as Administrator.
 
Thanks for the response... unfortunately... i don't know the password for the
administrator. Any other suggestions short of complete reformat and recovery
software?
