XP upgrade: hog the disk?

I want to upgrade the Windows partition of my dual-boot
Win98SE/Linux system to Windows XP. I've already
discovered (on company computers) that if you try to
clean-install XP on a partitioned disk, hoping to get to
a dual boot later, the install CD grabs all of the disk
for XP. If I do an upgrade from Win98SE to WinXP on an
existing dual-boot system, will the upgrade grab and
destroy my Linux partition?

Reply #1:

Not true at all. What you "discovered" is someone does not
know how to set a partition size during a clean install of XP.

Question #2:

"If I do an upgrade from Win98SE to WinXP on an

Reply #2:

All you need to do is launch Windows 98, then insert the
Windows XP Upgrade CD in the CD Drive, then select
the default "Upgrade" setup option (and not 'New Installation'),
and XP will perform the upgrade over Win 98 without touching
your Linux partition.

It does not have to. If when asked where to put the system, having
booted the CD, you hit ESC you can delete any existing partition and
make a new one - at that point you can change space from the suggested
'all available'
