XP upgrade from 98SE

The fine folks at Dell are telling me that I have to reinstall my operating
system since I am having some problems. If I have to do that I was thinking
up just upgrading to XP. Are their any advantages to XP over 98, such as
stability or speed, etc. Thanks for any and all comments.

It would be slightly slower than 98 but the stability with the Windows NT
core definitely makes up for it... but if you run any old DOS application,
check whether they are compatible with a W2K machine if they would work...

How old is your Dell? It may or may not be XP compatible. Microsoft has a
free XP compatibility program that can be downloaded, and it is also on the
XP cd. However, don't consider downloading unless you have broadband because
the file is over 40 Mb in size.

As for the advantages of XP, there are many: increased stability, choice of
NTFS or FAT32, improved multi-media, etc.. Do a Google search and you will
quickly find a complete technical description of XP.

It is three years old, so hopefully it will be compatible. I read some
reviews about XP on CNET and it seems people are pretty evenly divided on
rating it a thumbs up or down.........

That is no doubt so, however XP is really a big improvement over W98 or

You probably don't Tech Support people often say that since it
makes their job much easier--they don't have to do any real
troubleshooting (which they are likely incapable of). If I were
you I would describe your problems on a Windows 98 newsgroup
before doing it.

It's much more stable than 98, but no faster. If your hardware
isn't up to it, it could even be slower.
