I upgraded to XP Home SP2.
I broke it and uninstall/re-installed.
Everything seems good and I don't want to mess it up again.

I want to prevent Roxio CD (ver 5.3.5.10) from auto starting.
Is there a way to stop it without using msconfig?

Find out where it's starting from and remove it from there.

First step should be to check in the options for the program you don't
want to start and see if there is a setting to tell it not to run at
startup. The next step is to remove any entries you don't want from the
two startup folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

For anything else uncheck their entries in the startup tab of msconfig:
Start | Run | Msconfig | Ok

Another option is to remove the reference to them from one of these keys
in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Make sure you have a backup of the registry using a program like ERUNT
before making any changes to the registry.

Thanks for the attention. Now then...
The C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
folders are empty.

I don't see options in the program itself to enable (or disable) running at
startup.

When I unchecked the msconfig, my computer complained. This begs "Does this
modification have any other effect that may cause issues in the future?" I
only ask because it's simpler than changing the registry. If the registry
key change is "cleaner", I'm up to the task if need be.

*** side note: I recall a brief moment at the end of the upgrade where the
screen stated the program was "migrating". There may have been (or not) a
moment I could have clicked cancel but it seemed like a cool feature at the
time. I'm not sure where the install disk is. Sooo, does "migration" change
which folder the startup is running from?

<snip>

It would be better to post what the exact message was rather than "my
computer complained", but it was probably the standard message that
comes up when making a change in msconfig. Just tic the box that says
don't tell me about it again.
