XP updates

I got rid of my HP Photosmart 1000 printer and got a new HP Photosmart 7760.
Now whenever I get new XP updates from Microsoft, my computer thinks I still
have the old printer and adds it twice to my list of printers and makes one
of them the default! I have to go to control panel make my 7760 the default
printer and delete the two nonexistant printers. Is there somewhere in that
vast storage of info on my machine I can go to get rid of this aggravation?
I am not a skilled programmer but I follow detailed instructions pretty
well.
