XP Updates- The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000

This morning my XP Pro computer received notification of MS security
updates... I installed them with no issue and an optional MS update... with
no issues.

I then went to my second XP Pro computer, which is not on auto-update and
then downloaded and installed the same updates.

After rebooting, NO Application will run... The error message is:

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142), Click on OK to
terminate the application.

Can someone explain how I this can be fixed?

Thanks,
SteveB

OK, I am happy to report that after forcing a power down, and rebooting, my
firewall reported that "iexplorer/????" needed permission to execute... I
gave it permanent permission and everything started working OK!!!

We are up and running!!!... Don't know precisely what the problem was, but I
remember having to give permission to iexplore on my other XP computer after
the updates and reboot.

Please post the name of the firewall being used so that others who are
experiencing the same issue can learn how to resolve it.
Thanks.

This is a feature of Zone Alarm, not a bug.

When you give a program 'remembered' permission to access the Internet, ZA
stores details of the .exe.
So when MS update iexplore.exe as they did this week, ZA warns you that a
program called iexplore.exe is trying to access the Internet, because it is
not the instance of the program .exe which you gave permission to.

Good design when you think about it.

Thanks, Steve. As Newell pointed out, this is smart behavior as malware
can infect .EXEs. Any worthwhile firewall will detect this and prompt
one to either Allow or Deny it access the network/net.
One also wishes that whomever authors ZA shall also provide a way for it
to play nice with Windows/Microsoft/Automatic Updates out of the box.
Perhaps that's too much to ask ? <w>
