lsass.exe The application failed to initialize properly

XP professional:
When booting (either in normal or SAFE mode) - system gets this error before
any type of login screen: "lsass.exe The application failed to initialize
properly. Click ok to terminate." I am getting this error on a remote laptop
users computer, so I have limited access to the PC. He doesn't have a
bootable anti-virus CD or a bootable windows CD as tools. Any ideas on what
tools to use to tackle this issue.... Any help would be greatly appreciated.
