XP Update hangs at "Preparing to Install...."

I have tried to install various Windows (XP) Updates from MS and they ALL
download, then the install hangs with the "Preparing to Install..." label
being displayed. No action in the progress bar.

Any ideas?

Hi Larry!
Start/Run/CMD, type the following commands, pressing
ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc

No, this doesn't work. I have tried this in the past but I tried it again.
Same results.

Also, now I am getting the message that I have unknown versions of files on
my system.

Very frustrating...

I got the updates to run by running in Safe mode. I have a feeling that the
problem is tied to Norton Virus Protection in some way, but can't prove it.
Anyway, Safe mode works!
