win XP install problem

I'm trying to install Win XP Home edition with the installation process
hanging when it reaches the "installing devices" progress bar---

I am able to complete each of the preceeding installation phases for; 1)
collecting information, 2) dynamic update, and 3) preparing installation
sucessfully.

Then during the 4) "Installing Windows" phase, the "installing devices
progress bar" does move and progresses about half way through, before it just
stops and the system just hangs.

I've tried this several times and each time I get the same result.

What can I do? Thanks for your assistance.

I'm not suree what you mean by a "clean install". I'm
installing because of system startup problems of the old
system Win2000 and hoping that installing WinXP will
correct whatever was stopping Win2000 from loading
correctly.

The computer is a laptop and I'm concerned that I may
have some kind of a hardware problem, though when Win XP
prepared to install it didn't pick up any error in the
system, prior to it doing the device install (whatever
that entails).

I didn't run the upgrade advisor.

How do I disable bios level antivirus detection?

Hi,

1) As you are installing WinXP Home over Win2000, you will need to format
and do a "clean" installation. Upgrade is not an option, and if you are
installing to the same partition then XP's install routine may be interfered
with if the Win200 installation directories still exist.

2) Laptops are notoriously finicky, make sure you have proper supporting
drivers for the hardware installed.

Hi Rick,

Yes, I did reformat the drive at the beginning of the
install. I also chose to delete the old Win2000
partition.

How can I be sure that I have the proper drivers for all
the hardware installed? Is there a way that I can check
to see what drivers I need? or, what driver or hardware
device is causing the problem? or, can I somehow disable
some of the hardware to get a successful install of XP
and then add the hardware back later?

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Hanging at installation usually indicates it has run into either unsupported
or faulty hardware. You mentioned that the Win2000 installation was having
trouble - what sort of trouble?

Hi Rick,

The Win2000 installation would hang during start up with
12 of the 20(?) blue squares of the start up progress bar.

However, even though I couldn't get a normal boot up
using thw win2000 system, I was able to do a safe mode
start up... and even defragmented the c disk drive
sucessfully.

The Win2000 start up problem, happened out of the blue,
withe the system working Ok before. I did process some
win2000 updates, but removed them when I had the start up
hang problems.

Then, thinking the Win2000 system was screwed up, I opted
to reformat and try a win XP install... which is where I
am now.

I sure do appreciate your help. Thanks.
