Install of win XP pro problem

I was initially trying to install win xp (I have full version) over my win
98. This would not work so I deleted old OS (not done with CD) and
repartitioned hard drive (xp install disc did this) and during install of Win
xp the install will freeze during the install phase about four minutes into
the installing windows (installing devices) phase (after it has already done
the following steps
1. Collecting information
2. Dynamic update
3. Preparing installation ).
I have enough memory, hard drive space, and processing speed and the
computer is "clean" what could the issue be?? I have used this XP install
disc on an old laptop I had with a brand new hard drive with no problem.
I can clean the hard drive and reinstall win 98 and it works with no problems

Have you made sure that your computer's hardware components are
capable of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

Bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine with Win9x/Me
very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent hardware quality
requirements. This is particularly true of many models in Compaq's
consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class Pavilion
product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite sensitive
to borderline defective or substandard hardware (particularly
motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.

I have run the compatibility program that is in the xp cd and it states that
win 98 is not upgradable to win xp, but on the windows support site it shows
that win 98 is upgradable. Which leads me to believe that my there is an
upgrade that I need to download to upgrade to xp. I just have not been able
to find one that will work. Unfortunately my pc I am upgrading does not have
internet access (allowing for computer to search for update on microsoft
site), which is the main reason I am going to xp is for my wireless access,
because my linksys will not work with win98. I guess I could try to get a
win 2000 or me upgrade.

Actually, what that not-so-very clear message it saying is that you
can't perform an upgrade with that particular CD. You're using an OEM
CD, which cannot be used to perform an upgrade of an earlier OS, as it
was designed to be installed _only_ upon an empty hard drive. It can
still be used to perform a repair installation (a.k.a. an in-place
upgrade) of an existing WinXP installation.

An incorrect conclusion, I'm afraid.

WinXP would work, but you'll either have to obtain a retail Upgrade
license, or perform a clean installation using the OEM CD that you
already have.

After trying the non-fruitful upgrade route. I tried to wipe out the
Original OS using a erase hard drive utility from compaq and install the new
OS but this also stopped me at the same point of xp install??

How can I make sure that I have completely erased the original OS?? Any
recomendations on software to use to do this.
Thank you for the responses.

Any Retail version of XP, Home or Pro, Full or Upgrade will upgrade a 98 System
without anything further being needed. Make sure you have followed the other
suggestions in the Compatability Wizard and have all the needed XP drivers for
your hardware at hand and as always backup any files you can't afford to lose,
just in case of misfortune.
