XP tries to open file in temporary folder instead of saving to hard drive

When I try to download a file for some reason Windows XP
tries to open it in a temporary folder instead of saving
it to the hard drive. Is there a way to fix this? Thanks.

dont hit open when you download it if you want it to save
the install file to you comp. use the save link and tell
it where you want it to save it

That's not it, sorry for not being clearer. When I click
on a download link, Windows immediately tries to open it
in a temp folder, and that window that normally pops up
asking if you want to "Save" "Open" etc. isn't there. I
think I may have accidently checked something that makes
it so Windows always tries to Open the file without my
conset. I tried to turn it off by deleting my cookies but
that did not work. What's up?

Open Windows Explorer and go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to the file type in question and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Check the box for "Confirm open after download".
