XP transfer wizard

I want to transfer data from my old computer to one running windows xp using
the transfer wizard. All the computers in the house are connected to the
internet through a router, but that is the extent of the network. The old
one is running windows 98. Is there a way to just connect the old and new
computers, maybe through a usb cable so the new computer will see the old one
and allow me to just copy the files I want to transfer? My other alternative
would be to take the hard dirve out of the old computer, put it on the new
one, and tranfer that way, but a cable is easier to connect than adding hard
drives.

Advice?

If the old and new machines are both plugged into the router, then you
should be able to see one from the other, and copy files back and
forth.

You may connect the computers via a cross over network cable, if both
computers have network cards. It is easy. You may also connect with usb but
you will need a cross over usb cable also.
