XP thinks camera is broken!!!

I have a Kodak DX3500 and for the last several weeks, whenever I connect the
camera via USB to my laptop (IBM A21P), it displays an error that the USB
device malfunctioned. I know the camera's working because I connect it to
another PC and it works. And I know it's not the USB.
A few days ago I removed the hard drive and I plugged it in a few days
later. When I run chkdsk, I noticed that there were several damaged files
that chkdsk erased and/or fixed. As soon as it completed and after XP loaded
up, I plug the camera and I notice that it recognizes it (the pop-up bubble
New hardware found... is displayed). But then I unplug it to connect my
flash drive, and as soon as I plug in the camera again, I get the "device has
malfunctioned." error.
I have a feeling that it has something to do with some configuration,
because I know that the camera and the USB are working. It seems odd that
after XP removes some damaged files, the camera is then recognized. And once
I use the USB for my flash drive, it stops working.

What do you guys think?

I think you ought to go and examine your Event Viewer log, to see what is
happening.
