XP takes longer than Win 98 when entering a game room

Is there anything that can be done to speed up
the "download" process on XP for games.

I have XP and DSL on one pc and Win 98 and dial-up on
antoher. I get into the room faster with Win 98 and
dial-up.

Any help suggestions?
