XP takes and hour to boot up

I think I messed up XP the other day. When I boot up it
takes about an hour but when it finally does boot up it
runs normally.
The disk I have has a scratch on it I get to the same
place error message at the same place every time. It
can't find an .exe file.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried getting one of those disk repair kits to
remove the scratch from the disk?
