Xp takes 3 minutes to turn off

Does anybody know why Xp HOME takes a long time to turn
off?
It takes about 2 or 3 minutes to get to the blue screen
that has "windows is shutting down" and then it takes
about 1 minute to finally shut down.

I guess I can just wait for the long "Turn off" but I am
concern that this is caused by a virus

Thank you

Not really a symptom of a virus infection. This is probably the
"only" case where the use of a Registry cleaner is advisable.
When Windows shuts down, it writes session changes & other
data to the Registry. When a fair amount of disjointed keys such
as Class Identifiers (CSLID) are not valid this can delay the
shutdown process.
Currently, I use a tool called RegSeeker. It does a good job.
The danger with any Registry cleaner is the chance it will remove
valid keys or data. If this happens then some functions/features
of XP may not work correctly or at all. But, all of these cleaners
backup the data that is removed. If you find that something isn't
working after using one you can locate the backup (.Reg) and
double-click it to add those keys/data back to the Registry.
The best advice is always to have a current Image/Backup of
your system disk - just in case.

I followed you advice and I am going to use RegSeeker but
I have this problem since day one when I bought my
computer... brand new, fresh from the box... I mean, no
install/uninstall software yet.
Any ideas?

Thanks again

The Images that are created for commercial PC's always have
"Bloat ware", extra programs, beyond the operating system.
Most times you'll find AOL, Real Audio, Games, Encyclopedias
and perhaps 20-30 programs on the PC. All of these create keys
in the Registry. I've seen this situation time and again. Usually
after the Registry clean, the machine should shutdown to power
off in around 8-12 seconds.

Am experiencing similar problem. When I go to the process
of shutting down, sometimes it will shut down within
thirty seconds, other times it won't shut down at all.
The screen indicates that the "Windows is shutting down".
I can hear the HD shutting down but not the power supply.
I have to physically push the stop button for about four
seconds and then it will shut down. This phenomenon just
started a few weeks ago. Previous to that it was shutting
down normally. I checked the power supply connection to
the motherboard and it seemed OK. It could be a Windows
problem or a BIOS. I don't want to upgrade my BIOS unless
I really have to. It could cause more problems if not
done correctly. I'd certainly like to hear probable
solution/s.

Yes indeed, I deleted MSWorks and lots extra stuff... I
forgot that... well I installed RegSeeker but it shows
excesive amount of registry things that are either
missing, obsolete, etc. How do I know what is safe to
delete? Only the ones on RED?

Thank you
