XP stopped burning CD-R

I have a Sony CRX15E2 CD-R (and CD-RW) recorder. I've had
it for a couple of years. It worked fine, until about a
month ago, I can't burn a CD-R anymore. Using the built
in WINXP burning software, it says it is getting a write
error. Using Roxio, it says it is unable to complete the
writing of the data to the disc. I also noticed that
using the built-in WINXP burning software, every time I
get the error the IMAPI service dies. I can restart it,
but when I burn, it dies again.

I know it's not the drive, as I installed the drive in
someone else's XP machine, and it worked fine. And it's
not the discs, I've tried around 10 of them, from 2
spindles.

Recently, I bought an external USB 2.0 drive enclosure,
and tried it that way. Same problem!!! Furthermore, I
tried the USB device on a 3rd computer (a laptop). Same
problem!

So 2 machines don't work, one does. Both machines fail
with both WINXP burning and Roxio. Both machines show the
IMAPI service dying when it tries to burn.

What am I doing wrong? It used to work, not sure what
changed.

Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.

Try uninstalling and reinstall your burner software.
You've probably got a corrupted driver.

Thanks!

That's what I thought. But I'm trying to use the built-in
XP burning software, and that doesn't work. On 2
completely unrelated machines!

I also only recently added the Roxio software, and it
didn't work. If something was corrupted, it was already
corrupted.

I'd love to reinstall whatever software XP uses to burn
the CDs...but I can't figure out how to do it. Do I
reinstall XP? Will it wipe out any of my data?
