WinXP CD burning capabilities no longer functional after IE7 install -- is this typical?

Until a few weeks ago, I regularly used Roxio EasyCreator 5 to burn CD-
Rs on my Yahama FIZEN burner. I then downloaded and installed IE7,
and began to have problems.

I upgraded to Roxio EasyCreator 9, uninstalled that when it didn't
work, got Nero -- and that didn't work either. Happily, I was able to
System Restore to the pre Roxio upgrade configuration.

The CD burning capabilities built into WinXP don't work now, either.
I notice that this software is licensed from Roxio.

Other users on other boards have pointed the finger on IE7. Is this
the culprit? If so, will Microsoft issue a patch so that their own
WinXP CD burning capabilities will become functional again?

I'm reluctant to point the finger at the drive or the disks. The
disks always have worked well with this drive. Previous problems --
the last experienced over a year ago -- always have been software
related. Roxio needed an update because of a patch to Windows.

The inbuilt XP CD Wiz has not been updated since Sept 03, and should be
disabled if using third party burning apps like Nero or Roxio.. A third party
app is the best upgrade for the dated XP inbuilt, I'm afraid, or try Vista..

Type services.msc in the run box, disable the IMAPI burning service..

Might check the Upper & Lower filters for the optical drives..? The easiest
way to check without going into the registry, would be to go to Device
Manager, open DVD/CD-ROM drives, right click one of your optical drives,
select properties from the menu, Details tab, you should see "Device Instance
Id" and a drop down arrow (v), click it, move the mouse pointer down the list
to highlight Device Upper filters and click it, do the same for the Device
Lower filters, Class Upper & Lower filters as well to see and take note of
their contents.. Also, there should be just 4 MS signed drivers in the
Drivers tab, driver details button, driver files details window, may want to
check, your call.. MS signed drivers: cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys,
storprop.dll
See any others..? If you do might run the fix to clear the U&L filters, then
reinstall Nero or Roxio, not both, pick one for your default burning app..

Thanks very much for the reply. Here's what I've got:

Device upper filter: redbook
Device lower filter: imapi

class upper filter: gearASPIwdm
class lower filter: drvmcdb

and in driver file details ... yep, I've got gearASPIwdm.sys (from
itunes?) and drvmcdb (from Roxio?) listed along with the four you
named below.

Jaymon, you're obviously a more knowledgeable user than yours truly,
so forgive me for wanting to check before I leap into registry
editing: from what I've posted, does it look like a pretty sure bet
that these extra .sys files -- gearASPIwdm and drvmcdb -- might be
causing my headaches?

If so, I'll try reg-editing.

Thanks, by the way, for your post.

You don't have to edit the registry, the fix will clear the filters for you,
the "restore CD/DVD to explorer" sub-link, from the previous link provided,
is the same as the above..

I have used the above to remove gearASPIwdm among numerous other drivers
from the class/device upper & lower filters, I just don't do any
ripping/burning through the itunes app, I default to my Nero.. Itunes may
warn or prompt you to reinstall it on ocasion, I just ignore it..
If you reinstall itunes it will just reload gearASPIwdm.sys, you may however
want to reinstall your Roxio as I had to do with my Nero burning app.. The MS
generic drivers should reload automatically at boot-up, the Inbuilt CD Wiz
should be disabled in favor of your full featured Roxio app as I mentioned,
or use the XP inbuilt alone without the other burning app, your call..

Use the above links for reference, I still do..

If you need to you can reinstall the MS drivers..
In my computer, tools, folder options, view tab, in advanced settings,
you'll need to first mark "show hidden files and folders", then uncheck the
box for "Hide extensions of known file types".. Now you can go to the
windows\INF folder and find "cdrom.inf" and right click it, select install
from the menu..
Remember to change back to your original settings in folder options..
Hope it can help, post your results..

Great, take your time and review.. Just keep in mind that your just clearing
the optical drives U&L filters and not deleting or removing the actual
drivers in the C:\windows\system32\drivers folder.. Any other app that may
depend or use these drivers elsewhere in the system should be unaffected, ie,
if the driver happens to perform a dual function..
Be sure to investigate those reference links too..

I took a look at the reference links -- interesting, and valuable --
and did some more snooping around.

First, I pulled Itunes, which installed itself with Quicktime and
which I never wanted in the first place. Surprise! Up comes a 'found
new hardware' message for both my CD-R and DVD-ROM drives. Gearaspi
disappeared from 'filters,' too.

Re-installed Nero, tested, no soap -- still didn't work. But I paid
more attention to the error message this time, instead of just
dismissing it as 'software-specific.'

Power calibration error. That's what cdwriterxp reported too. I
should have paid more attention the first time around.

Googled up 'power calibration error,' and many online sources pointed
the finger at a possibly failing drive. Here, I've been educated. I
thought that these CD-R burners were pretty much immortal. How little
I knew.

To make a long story short: I've decided to throw hardware at the
problem, and now have an order in for a new burner. I use this
computer for work, mess around with it only when I need to, and can't
justify any more time troubleshooting the current drive if the drive
itself may be the culprit.

I'll find this thread again and post the ultimate results.

Please let me thank you again, Jaymon, for your excellent feedback

Thanks for your courteous and most generous reply..

Sometimes optical drives do pass on, though my first optical drive is still
working fine after 4 years + now, with Nero ver 5.5, so go figure..

My new Memorex 16x drive came with Nero 6.6, not using it though, in favor
of the older Nero version, for now, use a small freebie burning app as a work
around..
One question though, the Nero app you have, is it a retail version or did it
come bundled/included with the optical drive your replacing..? The same
question would apply to your Roxio software too..?

The reason I ask is that bundled burning apps are usually locked to the
optical drive they came with, a full retail version should see and be able
use any new or older optical drive without a problem.. I assume both Roxio &
Nero apps were retail versions, right..? I also assume your new drive won't
have a bundled burning app included with it, right..?

Sometimes people just forget to remove old bundled burning apps..
Or, the inbuilt XP burning capabilities.. (CD Wiz)

The error message you describe, does appear to indicate a problem with the
drive, PSU or type of media, dirty drives/media or even the IMAPI burning
service otherwise known as the inbuilt XP burning Wiz..

I think the problem is fixed. The new burner arrived -- a Sony 120,
all of about $50 -- and I was worried when 'found new hardware' didn't
appear on re-boot, but WinXP sees it and the first four CD-R burns
with Nero 7 came off without a hitch. I am using a retail ver of Nero,
and not one bundled with the drive.

One small point, for whatever its worst: the gearaspi driver is long
gone, but drvmcdb still shows up as a 'class lower filter' with this
drive. I wonder if WinXP might be loading this automatically, perhaps
to do the burning that comes stock with WinXP.

Anyway, Jaymon, thanks again for taking the time to respond -- and I
just hope this new drive holds up and doesn't give me any grief. The
lesson for me: these burners can fail.
