Where can I find and delte some startup programs.that are
not in the startup dir.

They do show in msconfig but you can't delete from here.

The first thing to do is to consider uninstalling any programs that
you do not want to use again.

The next thing to do is to try to eliminate automatic startups via
configuration settings that are incorporated into the applications.
Most applications that can start automatically allow users to turn off
this feature.

Enter the registry editor ("Start","Run", "Regedit", OK). Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SOFTWARE / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Run. Here are the programs set to run when Windows starts. This list should be basically the same as the MSCONFIG list we just saw. If you see any additional programs that appear to be out of the ordinary, delete the entry (backup first!) and close the registry editor.

Cheers for that. Have done it but I still need to get to
where XP loads the startup stuff that shows in MSCONFIG
as it is showing programs that are not in the uninstall
screens.

go to google type in startman look for review it will

give you the program install it. it will tell you what is
running and you can stop it there, if you are not sure
what it is right click it and you can identify it in
plane english what it is works great. tom

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.
