xp startup hangs up

When starting my computer it gets to the windows xp screen where there is
normally box's to select from as to who is logging on. No logon box's appear
it just sits at this screen.
What can I do??

Reboot in safe mode (when booting hit several times F8 and choose the option), then Start>Execute and type "msconfig" without quotes. Uncheck all the entries in "Start" tab. Note that this will disable your antivirus at startup. Reboot in normal mode, does is hang? If no, check one by one the entries untill you find the one with problem.

I rebooted in safe mode and it did the same thing. Hangs up at the windows xp

I've got the same problem. Using the recovery console is useless because now
my SAM is corrupt and I cannot log in as Administrator. Check out KB 308402,
but it won't help either unless you can log in and get your product ID.

There are some workarounds.

1. Pull out the hard drive from the broken computer. Put in as slave to
another computer running Windows NT/2000/XP. Then follow KB 307545 to use
the good registry from restore.

2. If you don't have another computer, try http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ to
boot it up. Get to a prompt. Then follow KB 307545 to copy the good
registry from restore.

Running chkdsk on either case might simply solve your problem.
