XP startup failure after hot fix KB884020

I loaded SP2 earlier this week and all was ok. Yesterday I loaded hot fix
KB884020-x86-emu, which I needed to access my work PC from home. Windows
created a System Restore point before applying the upgrade.
Following the upgrade, XP refuses to start. I've tried all the F8 options
including
Safe Boot and Last Known Good Configuration and they all fail at the end of
the startup process and loop back to starting again.
Can anyone help with this problem?

I'm not aware of any particular issues with that patch, but did you know
that Microsoft offers free telephone support calls associated with security
updates?
