Use the following to boot your machine and backup your data
Ultimate Boot CD for Windows

then try a repair install :-

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

If that doesn't solve your problems then you are probably looking at a
reformat and reinstallation of XP. Just make sure you have backed up
your data first.

Usually for xp to upgrade seperate from the current OS,or it installs to
another partition,is usually something (hardware) is connected to the
computer.
