How to Create a Recovery Disc in XP

Guest

Hi

I bought a desktop with XP already pre-installed on it so I do not have the
XP disc. When I first booted up, I was asked to create recovery disc. I chose
the make one later option.

However, I have never been asked again to make one. Is there anyway I can
start the program up to make a recovery disc?

Thanks

Short of buying a disc imaging application such as Ghost or TrueImage,
(a) Read the manual or instruction book or (b) Contact Tech Support for
the computer for verbal instructions.

It's very likely you can, but how you do this depends entirely on how the PC
manufacturer set it up.

Check the manual, the PC's help files, or contact their support staff.

Look in the start menu for a folder with the name of your computer manufacturer. Typically they
have a tool in there that will start the Recovery Disc processes. If you don't find it there
contact your manufacture, or their web site, for instructions. Generally you can make the recovery
disc anytime, if you haven't tried once before. HP only gives you one chance to start the process.
After that you have buy a set.

Though true, if you look at the folder contents you will note that a new
file is created once the recovery disks are made. Deleting this file allows
you to may another set.

You did not get a Windows XP disc or a recovery disk when you bought
your PC? Do you have an XP holograph sticker? Is this now "normal"
practice to sell a PC without a O/S disc or without a recovery disc?
Did you buy a new or used PC?

You could use Partition Magic or Ghost to make a recovery disc,
although these application programs must be purchased.

Yes, it is an unfortunately common and allowed practice. The manufacturer
requires the customer to make the recovery disk, but does provide the means
to do so. And it is usually a system restore disk, not a bootable XP CD
with recovery console.

One of the problems with that idea is... how can you be sure the disk works,
without testing it?

On the up side.. you can make several copies for safety.

But it is permitted under the MS license, though to my view, it shouldn't
be.

Many new systems, including Vista systems, use this model, and have for a
few years now. Go into a big-box store and ask about the disks that come
with various systems.... you'll find that few come with them.

Thanks Richard

I have found the Backup Manager and have successfully created the discs.

Thanks for your help
