xp start up problems

A friends pc will not start up either normally or in safe mode. It shows a
blue screen with 'UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME'on it.has anyone any ideas
 
The hard drive has probably 'gone west'..
 
Try booting to the OS CD and performing a repair. You may also have the
option to repair the boot partition as well -- of coarse if you perform a
Checkdisk task and the HD is badly damaged, there is nothing you can do.
