XP start up problem

I had to switch my PC off as was hanging at shutdown

When I switched on this morning it prompted me with the usual start in safe
mode or as normal screen.

However, it will not start XP either as normal, in safe mode or from last
good settings.

It does not give an error message, just reverts to the screen to ask if I
want to start in safe mode.

Any suggestions?

Go to start/run, and type :
PBrush

If this opens paint, all you have is a problem with your shortcuts in the
start menu folder. A new shortcut can be dragged in where you want it.

start run, type
%userprofile%/start menu

This is also true of the games. Perhaps an easy way to do them would be to
remove the checkbox for games in the Add/Remove app, OK, then recheck the
games checkbox again.

Thanks for the advice

I think this is further on than I am with it and I have now discovered an
error message.
