Start-up Loop

Hi Peepes,
Can anyone advise on how to get passed the black startup screen which gives
the options to; start normally, last known configuration, safe mode, safe
with networking and safe mode with command prompt?

I'm fairly sure this has started to happen since we had a power cut.

PC is evesham ebox with MS MCE XP Pro.
Many thanx in advance for any/all advice.
Chris.

Hi needlove, thanx for replying,

Yeh - I've tried start normally, last known good configuration, safe mode
and safe mode with networking all of which returns back to the same page.

I haven't tried "start with command prompt" only coz I'm not sure what to do
even if it should take me somewhere new, can you advise?

Chris.

Hi Chris

Try to change the boot.ini file.

Change:
timeout=30

to

timeout=0

and reboot.

I'm not sure if that helps cuz i never had that problem, but it sounds good.

Yeh, but how? As I say at the moment I'm stuck in this start-up loop and
can't do anything with it any suggestions?

Hi db, thanx for replying,

I've had a look at that link - and totally blew my mind - don't suppose you
know of an easy novice friendly option?

basically, what it entails
is initiating a command
called fixboot.

the process is similar
to running dos commands
when ms dos was popular.

if you have a windows
installation / setup cd,
you can run commands
like fixboot and chkdsk
at the harddrive level
instead from inside of
windows.

to begin, boot with
your windows cd.

then you will get to
a screen where you can
select the "recovery console".

you press the appropriate keys,
hit enter where it asks for a
password and enter the
number 1 where it asks
which o.s. you want to log
into (some people have more
than 1)

at the disk system prompt >
type and enter

fixboot

then type and enter

chkdsk

then type and enter

exit

remove the cd and try to
reboot as you would normally
do, preferably to normal
mode. if not, then try
booting into safe mode.

it the above doesn't work,
then we may have to do a
"repair windows" procedure.

Hi db, thanx for reply, sorry for delay in coming back to you - but have been
"offline" for a while - but up and running again now.

I 've had to reformat disc - did this with would you believe it "Evesham
Technical Helpline" who held my hand over the phone - took me a while with
work an all - but up and running again, although startup is now very slow
which is disappointing when I thought doing this would speed things up.

I've run "Registry Mechanic" which found 57 different problems with startup
but all had the padlock to the left indicating they coudn't be
changed/repaired should I try and rectify this somehow?
Many thanx Chris.
