When I first start my computer, the d drive door is activated and moves in
about 1/4 of an inch. the computer gets to "boot from cd:" and stops. I
push the button to open drive d and the start up cycle is completed, except
the d drive tray remains open and the button will not close the tray. I have
to manually close the tray but it does not completely close(1/4").
Can someone help me with this problem?

It sounds like you may have 2 possible issues here.

In your system BIOS try setting your first boot device to the hard drive

If after setting the boot device your CDROM drive (I am guessing this is
what you are referring to by the "d" drive), is still not closing properly, I
would suspect the drive has a mechanical problem.

My bios was set on cd-rom and I changed it to c drive. It seemed as if xp
was going thru the proper start up as the xp logo came up and the little
green dashes showed the program was loading , then the screen went blank and
nothing happened until I pressed the button on the cd-rom tray. The tray
opened and the program loaded fine but I had to again push it in manually.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks

I just posted this-looks like you and I are having related problems-any fix
yet?-dave

My cd drive is not acting properly. When I turn on the computer, it goes
into one of two states. One: the bios notifies me that the hardware
configuration has been automatically configured to include the CD drive
(Samsung sc-140Q), in which case the cd light stays on; or Two: I get the
same notification except without the CD drive and the drive lights stays
off. Either way, I can not even get the cd drive to eject. When the light
stays on, windows recognizes it and tells me the device is working properly
but it clearly is not. This started shortly after I installed Windows XP
Home edition. I also was using iTunes in case it could have caused this
problem. The CD drive and startup were all working fine for a week or so
after I installed XP and iTunes. HELP - dave

I don't think my first reply went thru. I stated that when I checked the
bios, it was set on cd-rom and I changed it to c drive. It then appeared my
computer was going thru the proper start up because it did not stop at "boot
from cd:". the xp logo and the little blue dashes indicated the progam was
loading properly. But the screen went blank and nothing happened until I
pressed the button to open the d drive tray and the program finished loading,
except the tray would not close and I had to close it manually again. Also
the green lite on the tray blinks continuously.
Any other suggestions?
Jim
