XP SP3 Won't Load

Using the Auto-update function I have tried 2 times to update my Windows XP
SP2 to SP3. The auto-update function goes all the way through the process,
then gives me an error message saying SP3 cannot be installed, then it backs
everything out ending with a message that now XP may not run correctly. Any
ideas where I start to resolve this?

The windowsupdate group.
Though you might check with you hw manufacturers sites, or OEM PC site for
driver updates
(NOT winupdate)

Yesterday I had another go at installing SP3 on a Toshiba Equium laptop. It
got through most of the procedure, then there was a message "setup
interrupted" and it automatically restored the previous configuration.

I am tempted not to bother with a SP3 upgrade. The more I try, the more
likely I'll end up with an unbootable system. Presumably nobody can explain
what "interrupted" the setup? I know it wasn't anything I did.

Yes, I know - and don't get me wrong, your post was very useful. If I really
want SP3 I have the option of conducting one experiment after another, until
eventually SP3 will successfully install or in the alternative, my computer
will stop booting up and I can then do a total reinstall of XP.

I tried again and this time it worked. In case this helps anyone else, I
rebooted a few times to make sure that there were no updates awaiting reboot
to complete installation, then uninstalled my anti-virus program, then did a
"clean reboot" (msconfig, then disabling everything other than basic
Microsoft services).
