XP PRO SP3

I loaded a copy of XP SP3 onto my laptop to upgrade from XP Home.
Unfortunately I need to be at SP2 for my Rockwell software to run correctly.
Any ideas on how to do this without formatting the drive and starting over?

OK.

Are you sure? Have you tried it? You're interpreting it as specically
requiring SP2, but perhaps it needs at *least* SP2.

Ken, I loaded the software onto the sp3 system and it wound not function
correctly. I contacted Rockwell and was told that sp3 is not supported, I
must be at sp1 or 2.

loading a copy of the
o.s. doesn't sound
kosher.

-------------------

firstly, anti piracy prohibits
loading copies of the o.s..

however, though it is possible
the "activation" process would
hinder its usage and long term
operation.

secondly, if the o.s. you
purchased was sp3 version,
then you cannot uninstall
the integrated update and
make it sp2.

------------

the hope for you would be
that the maker has provided
a patch or update.

which would make sense
since many owners of their
program were updated to
sp3 without consent.

Mark, When I loaded pro, sp3 was on the CD so the updates do not show up in
the add/remove programs.

OK, sorry to hear it. But software like that is unusual and very poor..

I agree with the above. SP3 is the future and the Software maker
should follow suite and fix their application for SP3. I can't believe
its such a hugh issue. Get their heads out of the sand. Sure, don't
put time into Vista, thats another story, but SP3? Wow, that really is
putting your head in the sand.

That's what I though, recently had this same issue and install from an OEM
XP Pro SP2 disk using an SP3 product key, it took the key just fine, but
once installation was complete it wouldn't allow logon until activated. It
would not activate online (said it was successful, but once I clicked ok it
said I must activate again), and when I chose the phone option the
installation ID area was blank. Is there a trick to it?

yeah, but you can't really
put the blame on the maker.

microsoft screwed up big time
by marketing sp3 way after vista
was already marketed eventhough
the only difference it had with sp2
was 4 meager updates that had
nothing to do with improving
windows performance.

------------------

now, the third party makers
are likely gearing up for
windows 7.

rhetorically speaking, will
microsoft plan to release
winxp sp4 and or vista sp2
after releasing and selling
windows 7?

If I can find an earlier version and get it installed,
1) would it be a legal copy and
2) could I get online and get sp2 and/or updates not to include s3?

Your reply is a tad confusing, OEM disks ARE from Microsoft. The disk and
key I was using were OEM system builder.

Some people already have the software in place, like one of my dentist
clients, there are either no upgrades available or they're extremely
expensive.

K

Agreed. I wouldn't purchase software that can't run on SP3!

I feel even more strongly about it than that. To me it's not specifically an
SP3 issue, and I would avoid any software that couldn't handle any upgrade
to the operating system. Absolute worst case, if an uograde created an
incompatibility, the software manufacturer should very quickly develop and
release a free upgrade that solved the problem.
