Here's a Q I need to find an answer to.
What happens if I pass on installing SP2? It appears to be more of a
Pandora's box rather than a true salvager.
It seems to be causing more grief and seems to have been released in haste
since there is some kind of a profit line to be met.
Look I have professional system mechanic and powerful anti-vrus software and
I don't mean symantec or norton that SP2's new "features" don't really make
all the difference in the world.
SP2 is not thoroughly tested on all platforms and apps either!
More and more I am thinking I'll need to learn another OS since I am getting
fed up with all the glitches one encounters with this OS!

I worry about this, too. It does seem easier just to
say "no", but XP keeps bringing up an "updates are
available" window and I've heard that Microsoft plans on
eventually doing just this to make all of us upgrade, like
it or not.

I use a lot of old software and connections, and I'd
rather not screw everything up, even if it's a well-
intentioned upgrade.

Not sure what you mean by "profit line"? Besides being free for the
downloading, you can also order the CD free of charge, including the
shipping charges. Microsoft recommends that you share the CD with your
friends.

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Service Pack 2 is more than tighter security by monitoring the system for
the presence of anti-virus software, firewall and updates. Here is the list
of bug fixes:

As far as being tested on "all" apps, it probably has not been, but then
software developers had plenty of time and opportunities to test their
products before the update was released.

To answer your comment about "causing more grief and seems to have been
released in haste". If you are basing your opinion on what you see in these
newsgroups, that is like visiting a hospital to determine what shape the
world is in, your logical conclusion would be that the world is very ill.
Support newsgroups are where the folks having problems congregate.

If you decide to not install SP2, there are procedures, from Microsoft, to
accomplish this.

Automatic Updates.

Dear Komboloi:
UR an idiot. The problem with windows (and any other
OS for that matter) is/was/ and forever will be, is that
the more popular it gets, the more it will get hacked.
There are thousands more people trying to hack windows
than microsft will ever have employees. Its just a fact.
Blame them, not microsoft. As for learning another OS,
shure go ahead....thill that one getshacked just as bad.
And its coming soon for linux.

"SP2 is not thoroughly tested on all platforms and apps either!"
That is an impossibility and will never happen with any application
whether Microsoft is the manufacturer or somebody else is..
How many Windows XP Computers in the world?
Now take into account no two are identical, "all platforms and apps"
can never be tested.
Even so, SP-2 is probably the most tested piece of software ever.

Much of the grief could have been prevented with routine maintenance
such as keeping the computer clean from viruses.
Other problems are really non issues since often all that is needed is
a reconfiguration necessitated because of the added features.

If you are diligent about maintaining your computer, you may not need
SP-2...today, tomorrow may be another story.

This is like another girl's dead cat story.
Sure we all sympathize and empathize for the girl's feeling BUT
It's a CAT. Let is go and move on.
Soon you'll get another kitty. A 64 bit kitty. :)
:P
