xp sp2

Have a Dell running xp with sp1 installed. Autoupdate downloaded and
installed sp2. Now, every time I boot up I get a message saying "corrupt
windows files" and to "reinstall xp from disk". However, system won't let me
do that! Tried system restore but always tells me to "pick a different date".
Can't seem to restore to a point prior to sp2 installation. Once I
acknowledge the boot up error message, everything seems to run OK however.
What's going on here! How do I get rid of this annoying bootup message. Is
something really wrong?

Have you tried booting into safe mode without networking and uninstalling
SP2 and then trying to reinstall it with your AV turned off? Might work...

Please provide the exact text of the error message. The one referring to
"corrupt windows files".

Had you cleaned your computer of spyware / viruses before installing
SP2? Was the SP2 installation from CD or download from Windows Update?

Hope this helps.

Actually, I Don't really see an "error" message perse' (no #). Headliner is
"Windows File Protection" - Files that are required for windows to run
properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. Could effect stability"
"Possible reasons for the problem..... Inserted wrong CD (different windows
product CD than the version installed"

that's it

Well, if you can get into the OS (if I'm reading your first post right) try
start > run > "sfc /scannow" without the quotes > hit the enter button. Have
your XP installation CD handy as it will ask for it. Does that help?
