I am a rookie. I am about to upgrade my 2001 Gateway
laptop from Me to XP Home. If I buy XP Home Upgrade today
from retail store or MS online will the upgrade already
have SP2? Or will I need to immediately install SP2?

Visit windows update after the upgrade and see if it is listed for download.
One more thing, nobody needs to immediately install SP2.
