Which "upgrade" to purchase!

Help! Can anyone help a real rookie? I am runnig ME on
my 2001 Gateway laptop. I want to upgrade to XP Home. I
find two products available in the retail marketplace with
different #'s, specifically: "N0-00050" and "N0-00985."
What's the difference? Does "N0-00985" have SP1 already
included? Something else? Is it better to buy "N0-00985"
or "N0-00050"? Is there another product that already has
SP2 included? Thanks!

Blue Box - Professional, Two flavors - Update & Full
Green Box - Home, Two Flavors -Update & Full
**Look for new packages with "Enhanced Security Sticker"
which means they have SP2 code, avoid earlier packages
as you'll have to upgrade to Service Pack 2 manually.

You'll need XP Home Upgrade ~$100.00, sometimes $10
or so cheaper at Sam's Club or CostCo.

Which ever Windows XP you chuse, Pro or Home, I'd run windows xp adviser to
see if your computer and its components are compatible, it will generate a
report
and tell about what it finds.

they are upgrades not updates. the service pack is an
update not an upgrade.

Laptops are very proprietary. Make sure you check with Gateway for any
issues related to upgrading to XP and any needed drivers.

Those numbers are used to trace batches of CDs back to the plant and are
not indicative . If a CD includes Service Pack 1 it will say so on the
CD itself (unfortunately not on the box). I understand that ones with
SP2 are starting to come through retail channels; those do say on the
box. So I would either look for one, or pick up a SP2 free CD, which
would update either 'original' or 'with SP1' in one operation
