I installed XP SP2 and everything seems to be working
fine. EXCEPT when I go to shut down. Windows hangs on
the "shutting down the computer" screen and locks up
there. It doesn't shut down. I've searched for answers
all over Microsoft and can't find anything. Any ideas?

Any other suggestions? None of those suggestions solved
the problem (except uninstalling SP2). I don't want to
go that far yet until I've exhausted all avenues.

Hello, after reviewing more than one forum and hearing that my shutdown problem could be software or hardware recently installed, I tried disabling a newer sound card I installed that has a digital output. Sure enough it was my sound card blocking windows from shutting down. It is a Dynex dx-sc51 $30 from a local Retailer. I just live with resetting it by using the button. After all my clean up with spyware and registry settings my pc runs well even with the shutdown problem. It would shutdown during the "Windows is shutting down" phase. I may relocate the sound card to another PCI Slot. I still prefer the digital sound to analog so I will keep it turned on and deal with the shut down issue. Hope that helps someone. I put enough time into it.
