XP SP2 - Standby is missing on turn off

Hi all--

I had a fatal error, and ended up having to reinstall
(a "fresh cpoy from CD) XP Pro (SP1)...then I downloaded
XP SP2. Two questions:

1. How can I get rid of the original XP SP1 that I know
is still lurking (comp is SUPER SLOW)

2. On turn off from start button, my STANDBY button is
dimmed, and unavailable. I had to reinstall all Dell
system tools, including drivers, but nothing helps.

Thanks in advance.

Did you perform a 'clean install' of Windows XP? This process completely
erases your entire hard disk and makes you reinstall all your software all
over again. In that case, your original installation is gone - nothing to
get rid of.

Did you perform a 'repair install' of Windows XP? This replaces your current
installation of Windows with a fresh copy, without erasing anything on your
hard disk. In that case, your original installation has been overwritten -
nothing to get rid of.

If your computer is slow, it must be for another reason or reasons. For
example, did you defragment after installing SP 2?

To regain the ability to go to standby, you must be sure to follow Dell's
instructions for reinstalling the drivers from the CDs you received. For
explicit directions, see here:

Hi again--

I first did a repair, and when that did not work I
did a new install of a "fresh copy". I do have a CD from
Dell for drivers, but I was unaware that the standby
feature is on it. My hard drive was not wiped out,
because I can still access all of my old files, that I was
told by Dell that I would lose, and I just copied them to
my new "MY DOCS" folder. The only things I could not find
or recover were OUTLOOK EXPRESS e-mails that I saved...I
also got back all of my FAVS for Internet Explorer!!!

Something must have gone awry...any ideas???

Thanks
