SP2 did not cause your problem.

I would suggest performing the following maintenance:

I have had this problem for a number of years, both with Windows XP
(vanilla, SP1 and SP2), and previous versions of windows, on at least three
different PCs. There seem to be a number of third party programs which
Windows Explorer takes a dislike to - searches on the internet reveal a
range of options, none of which solved my problem. By all means try the
solutions proposed here - you may be lucky. I would suggest that it is a
lack of 'robustness' in the programming of Explorer over a number of years
which is the real culprit. Not SP2 specifically.

Incidentally, every time I get an application error in explorer I send the
error report to Microsoft. They must have hundreds of them from me alone so
far. Still no satisfactory result though.

Rt-click Shortcut is Explorer; goes about:
- CLSID shell extensions to Explorer
- actions for the .lnk file type

Shell Extension Viewer may shed a light - it's free, download and play
cautiously with it.

It seems possible to me, Carey's disclaimer notwithstanding, that SP2
could be relevant in that it may change what ActiveX etc. is allowed
within the local HD "My Computer" zone. If some add-in depends on
these things working, and doesn't error-check and gracefully degrade
when not, then you could see this mileage.

OTOH, installing an SP involves writing a lot of code files through
RAM to file system on HD. Any general problems at any of these points
could generically mess you up, so Carey's tshooting tips are good.

Do you have a link for it, please?
