Matthew,

If you have SP2 installed why are trying to install it again? Other than
that, scroll down to:
Windows XP - Software Updates and double click on Windows XP Service Pack2
and click Remove.

Thats the problem there is nothing in add/remove to do
this the error message i get is Error Code: 80240034. I
only haave RC1. Thats why I wanted to update to the new
one SR2

I can download it direct but still won't let me install.
Keeps asking to uninstall previuos version which I can't
do.

I would suggest from here to check with the SP2 newsgroups and Windows
update. Good luck and keep us posted!

Matthew:

Post in the SP2 NGs, as generally, it is not necessary to uninstall RC1 to
install RC2.
NGs:
http://communities.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.asp?icp=xpsp2&slcid=us

While using SP2 RC1, I selected the 100MB update option on the MS update web
site, and RC2 installation was done without me uninstalling RC1.

From a post in the SP2 NGs:
"RC2 installs straight over RC1.

I did this on 1 PC using Windows Update, and another using
the Network Install. Both PC had RC1, which I didnt
uninstall. Neither had any warnings and RC2 works fine on
both. "

Previous builds (ie RC1) would not install if early betas
were installed - this is not the case with RC2. "

Having problems with beta software? Hell, MS can not get the software
that is sold for hundreds of dollars to work right, so why the hell
would you expect MS Beta software to work right?

Don't want problems with beta software, then DON'T INSTALL BETA
SOFTWARE! Leave it to people who know what they are doing!

In Add/Remove check the 'Show Updates' box. that should reveal the
'Windows XP Service Pack 2' entry to allow a removal of it

Hi Matthew,

Although I haven't tried it with XP (but worked well on Win2000, read
below):

AFAIK, the key in the registry that identifies which service pack is
installed is in:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\CSDVersion

You can try to delete/rename the key (don't forget to back your
registry before doing so).

Tampering with this key helped me out when I had to install a Service
Pack 3/4 for Win2000 in order to install VS.NET 2003, but the machine
hung up after installing the SP. What I did was simply change the
value of this key to a more advanced SP version (SP2 was installed and
I changed it to SP3/4) and that did the trick - VS.NET didn't bother
me again with this issue and installed correctly.

So what you can do, is to try and delete/rename that key, and maybe
the installation of SP2 RC2 will "think" that no service pack was
installed on this machine.

Elad.
